Lonely Stool

Lonely Stool

November 2015

Pine Wood, Acrylic Paint, and Blue and White Felt

SFAI Design Visualization/ Conceptualization

The top of the stool is 5” in diameter, and is suspended 2 ½ feet off of the ground. The bottom of the stool is 20” in diameter.

Concept:

If a person is only tolerable in temperament, than is it assumed that they possess an altered state of mind? If one is difficult to enjoy, should their problems be considered in relation to their peculiar living environment, or strange sense of aesthetic? What are the qualities of a frustrating person?

A person who is driven to drive people away cannot be very functional. And though people are susceptible change, you can imagine a subject or object, that when kept past its “expiration date”, causes the user to expire. In such a case, both user and object have passed their mental capacity for change. The “altered” person, though fond of the subject/object rids themselves of it in desperation, only to find themselves feeling lonely; made evident by their insistence to posses the thing past its expiration.

But, what does it mean to be lonely?

Through such a situation, we can understand loneliness to be the lack of something physical. However, anyone who has felt lonely knows that besides this lack there is much more involved. Loneliness brings content, happiness, anger and sadness. Loneliness may evoke physical or mental collapse, or give way to an altered belief. After a point, all comforts become lost.

Needless to say, any attempt to bring these ideas into a three dimensional medium would be an absurd one at best. However, an attempt to categorize these ideas into sets, an attempt to give physical traits to these ideas, and tie them to an already existing thing, seems graciously less absurd.

The stool itself consists of a dunce cap shape made of Pine Wood and Blue Felt. Four pegs lay off to the side providing the user with a complex answer to a very simple task; to sit.

Note that this product is of little function. It is much more an art piece to be displayed in a gallery, than a practical piece of furniture in your home.
